Choosing a paint colour is no easy task. After going back and forth between colours, you then must select a finish. Although going neutral may seem like a simple fix, it can leave your home looking plain. Incorporating an accent colour does not have to be overwhelming or too bold with the help of our Interior Design Team. They will assist you will all the difficult design decisions, so you can focus on enjoying your home.
Rather than going bold all throughout your home, choose a focal point to highlight. An accent colour will allow the eye to draw to the focal point, creating visual interest. This can include a couch, painting, chair, vase, or any other accessory of your choice. Accessories are a more affordable option, which makes them easier to swap out when you are looking for a design refresh.
When using an accent colour, it is important to continue it throughout an entire space. Using too many colours can make a space feel busy and small. Accent colours do not need to be monochromatic; they can also include 2-3 complimentary or contrasting colours. When in doubt, use the colour wheel.
Consider the View
When working with an open-concept space, it is crucial to consider the flow of accent colours from room to room. Choosing a similar paint and accent colour is highly beneficial in these types of spaces. Keep in mind, having the same accent colour throughout an entire home can also be overkill.
Painting can be a big investment, especially in a large home. Select one neutral paint colour to use throughout the interior of your home and decorate with accent accessories. If accessory accents are not bold enough, try adding accent walls to break up a space. Painting a single wall is not only easier to change but also more affordable.
Shades, Tints & Tones
An easy way to incorporate an accent colour is by using different shades, tints, and tones of the same colour. This not only creates variety but also is a fool-proof way of ensuring accent colours flow.
Think in Fractions
When colour planning, use the 60-30-10 formula to ensure proper flow and consistency. A base colour should be 60% of your home, a secondary colour should be 30% of your home, and an accent colour should be the final 10% of your home. This fraction formula can be a bold or as subtle as you want it to be based on your colour selection.
