Top Flooring Options for the Basement

Top Flooring Options for the Basement

December 22, 2021 Posted by Trina Fong All Posts, Construction & Renovation

The basement is more susceptible to water due to being closer to the ground. Because of this, it is important to carefully select flooring options that are water resistant. When selecting a flooring option, consider durable flooring materials such as tiles, concrete, or vinyl.

Vinyl

Vinyl comes in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes including planks, tiles, and sheets. Sheet vinyl flooring is an ideal option in a basement, as it has fewer seams to allow water to seep into. This type of flooring varies in price from reasonable to luxury and holds heat well.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is a modern take on vinyl sheet flooring. Adhesive is used to join planks together and adhere to the subfloor. They resemble just about any type of floor material and come in a variety of thicknesses.

Ceramic & Porcelain

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are the best option in a basement for their durability. They are resistant to rot and water damage, as they easily dry out. Although they have their benefits, they also have their cons. Ceramic tiles are cold to walk on, especially in the basement where it stays a cool, moderate temperature. Radiant in-floor heating is an ideal solution to cold floors.  Homes that are not level will require proper leveling before installation.

Concrete

Concrete is a superior option in a basement, as it absorbs moisture and dries easily. With industrial design increasing in popularity, concrete is becoming more desired for walls, floors, and other surfaces. Options including staining, painting, or left as it is. One downside to concrete is it is cold on the feet.

Engineered Hardwood

Unlike regular hardwood, engineered hardwood can retain some amount of moisture and temperature resistance due to its cross-hatched base. They are quite stylish and come in a variety of colours and styles but are on the pricey side. Engineered hardwood is stapled or nailed to the subfloor, making it difficult to easily be removed.
